--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once again, the Fall season is descending upon us and with it comes Fall Lake George. Fall Lake George is the biggest and best outdoor event this side of summer. Almost every year for the last 79 the Rensselaer Outing Club (ROC) has hosted the Intercollegiate Outing Club (IOCA) fall event; this year is no different. The weekend-long shindig begins this year at 2:00pm on FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2009 and goes through Sunday September 27th.
What is FLG???
About 250 college students and alumni from schools all over the east coast will be arriving at Lake George on Friday afternoon. They will have the option of taking a powerboat or a one person or two person canoe to Turtle island which is about two miles away from the launch site, Veterans Beach (in Bolton Landing). Once on the island they will setup camp and settle in for the night.
On Saturday morning, all the real fun begins. The Rensselaer Outing Club as well as other outing clubs will be leading trips of all different types. Rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, cliff jumping and hiking are just some of the things that people will be doing. Transportation to all these activities is provided. On Saturday evening, once everyone has gotten back to the island, a huge feast is served, followed by a traditional Square Dance. If you have never Square Danced you can't say you don't like it until you have tried it.
On Sunday most people sleep in, exchange names and info and then head home.
My best advice is if you are on the fence about coming; don't make any decisions until you talk to someone who has been to FLG before, I guarantee that they will tell you what a great time they had.
Now for the logistical information:
This year we will be departing from Veterans Beach in Bolton Landing. We launched from the same place last year and the year before (directions below). The powerboats and canoes will be available starting at noon on Friday. After dark we cannot guarantee that any boats will be able to leave the beach so the earlier you can arrive the better.
What's the deal with food?
RPI students will be fed breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday as well as breakfast on Sunday. Non RPI students will be fed only the Saturday night feast. Please plan accordingly.
How much will FLG cost???
First of all let me just clarify that anyone can come to FLG. You don't have to be an Outing Club member or even a current student of any school to attend, so invite all your friends. The cost of FLG is $35 which helps pay for food, generator, gas, truck rental, square dance callers, island use and other general expenses. If you will be providing your
own transportation to and from Turtle Island (in other words, you have your own boat) then this is all you need to pay. If you don't have a boat or would prefer to take the powerboat to the island then there is an additional fee of $25.00. As mentioned before you may opt to rent a canoe for the weekend at a cost of $70 (for the whole canoe, you can get multiple people in a canoe). Just as an FYI the cost of FLG for you is a bare minimum. Payment options: If you would like to just show up and pay the day of the event there will be a $5.00 procrastination fee. This fee can be avoided by simply following the directions below. If you are an RPI student you can charge everything to your student account.
How can you lead a Trip at FLG?
If you plan on leading a trip or want someone to lead a specific kind of trip on Saturday, which I believe most people will, let me know the details; what activity, what time you plan to leave and what time you plan to return. I will post all the trip details on Friday along with meeting places for Saturday morning.
