Trips ******************************************* 1. Spring Conference a success! IOCA's annual Spring Conference was held last weekend (April 21st to 23rd) in DAR State Forest in Massachusetts. There was a large turnout with over 60 people and 12 colleges represented. The weather was a cold and bit damp, but that didn't slow us down! There were hikes on Saturday to DAR State Forest, Grace and Greylock State Parks. In addition, a group went rock climbing and another went whitewater rafting in Deerfield. Everyone had a great time, despite getting a bit wet in the rain. School outing clubs in attendance included (let me know if we missed anyone): Brandeis Bridgewater Marlboro College Mount Holyoke College MIT Nassau Community College SUNY New Platz SUNY Cobleskill RIT RPI as well as individuals from Harvard, Northeastern, and Cornell The dinner and dance were held in Williamsburg. Great burgers and soup helped to warm us up. The contra dance was a huge success. The band was great and many of the people attending the conference were able to learn how to contra dance (which is very important). IOCA officers were elected for next year (see below). Back at DAR State Forest we had some smores while keeping warm around the fire. Spring Conference was a lot of fun this year. It was great to see so many new and familiar faces! We hope that everyone who came had a great time. And for those who were not able to make it, we hope to see you at Fall Lake George in September! [Many Thanks to the folks at Mount Holyoke for doing a wonderful job of organizing!!!] ******************************************* 2. IOCA General meeting and officers election At Spring Conference, the annual IOCA general body meeting took place. The primary orders of business were electing officers, recruiting help for running IOCA, and raffling off some AMC books. Christiaan Adams (MIT Outing Club) was re-elected for a second term as Executive Secretary. Anne Becker agreed to help Christiaan and Elizabeth Burrows (previous directory chair) with directory activities. Brian Sudran (SUNY New Paltz Outing Club) was elected as the new Conference Chair, and will be hosting Spring Conference next year! The other positions remain with those who previously held them: http://www.ioca.org/officers/. All those who volunteered to help with IOCA are encouraged to contact the Exec Sec. The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), one of the oldest outdoors related organizations in the country, provided a number of books and magazines on hiking and boating in New England. These were raffled off to the clubs present. Many thanks to the AMC for this, and for offering it's member discounts on some of its services to IOCA members. For more details on this offer, see the previous IOCA email in the archives: http://www.ioca.org/iocan/ ******************************************* 4. Job Opportunities. Message-ID: <063e01c6d13d$8c9d09f0$b3062612@auvgis> Fall Lake George is coming! Fall Lake George is one of the sweetest camping events of the year! Hundreds of students from ten plus schools gather on Turtle Island for a weekend full of hiking, canoeing, cliff jumping, rock climbing, etc. It's a pretty awesome way to relax for a weekend while meeting tons of other people with similar interests. Did I mention the steak dinner and square dance? They're going to be swingin' too! If you're not sure whether you should come or not, ask somebody who has been and they'll tell you how great of a time FLG is. Fall Lake George is set for September 22-24th this year... the cost is $30 for general admission and an additional $70 for a canoe rental (two person) or an additional $25 for the Powerboat ride (per person). In order to sign up, shoot me an email preferably with your school as a whole and we'll make arrangements (probably check payment). If you've got questions check out: http://outingclub-alpha.union.rpi.edu/flg_info.php or feel free to shoot me an email at Youmas at rpi.edu Note: FLG is a *dry* event See you on the Island, Scott Youmans Rensselaer Outing Club Member at Large PS. Club leaders, please forward this to your membership, and make sure someone at your school is organizing a group. It's easiest if you sign up as a group rather than contacting Scott individually... plus, the more the merrier!! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Outing Club members from around the northeast are invited to join us at MITOC's "Camelot" cabin near North Grotton, NH. It's is very close to the famous Rumney rock climbing crags, and a short drive to excellent hiking in Franconia Notch and other areas of the Whites. We are still working out details of whether the cabin will be available to us on Friday night, so we may have to camp outdoors at the cabin on Friday , or come up on Saturday morning, but we'll know better soon. On Saturday and Sunday, we'll organize a variety of trips, depending on what folks want to do. We will provide Saturday and Sunday breakfasts, and dinner on Saturday night. The cost will be $15 per person, for food and the cabin. You will be responsible for organizing your own transportation. The cabin has electricity, but no running water. There is a stream for water, so plan to treat water or bring your own. Fall Lake George 2006 is another success Once again the Rensselaer Outing Club (ROC) hosted a great trip to beautiful Lake George, continuing this long-standing IOCA tradition. Well over 200 students and alums arrived on Friday evening, and had a great day of hiking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming on Saturday. Unfortunately, the weather report for Sunday necessitated that the canoes leave on Saturday night. But we managed to get in an awesome barbeque and square dance before packing up and heading across the lake in the darkness. Many thanks to Scott Youmans, the ROC crew, and everyone else who helped to make it a fun and safe trip.
