Hello IOCA clubs and members!

We've had a great start to the semester.
Below is the latest news from the Intercollegiate Outing Club Association (
http://www.ioca.org ):

1. Another successful Fall Lake George
2. Post your FLG Photos to the IOCA gallery!!!
3. New Bear Canister Regulations for the Adirondacks
4. Upcoming trips

---------------------------------------------------
1. FALL LAKE GEORGE follow up...

Fall Lake George (FLG) was awesome! We had well over 200 students from all
over the northeast on Turtle Island in Lake George, NY. Everyone spent a
glorious day on Saturday canoeing, hiking, climbing, swimming, and cliff
jumping. The day finished with a great steak dinner and square dance on the
island. Some folks even got to go swimming again...involuntarily! Many
thanks to the Rensselaer Outing Club (ROC!) for doing an awesome job of
organizing and coordinating the weekend! We can now look forward to next
year's Spring Conference being hosted by Mt Holyoke!!

Here's a list of schools that came:
Bloomsberg
Brandeis
Clarkson
Lehigh
Marlboro
MIT
Mt. Holyoke
Nassau
New Paltz
RIT
RPI
Syracuse
Stony Brook
Union
Wellesley
...a great showing! Let me know if I missed anyone.

On a sad note, a sightseeing boat capsized on Lake George today, killing
many of the elderly passengers.

It's a good reminder of the need for safety, and we thank ROC for keeping
FLG safe once again!

2. POST YOUR FLG PHOTOS... a beginner's guide...

IMPORTANT.... Don't forget to post your FLG photos to the IOCA gallery!
http://www.ioca.org/gallery/FLG-2005
It's totally FREE and registration is quick and easy, so don't wait... post
your photos and share them with everyone!

Here's the quick and dirty on how to get started:

REGISTER
- Go to the gallery home page ( http://www.ioca.org/gallery/ ) and click on
the "Register" link.
- Choose a user name, and enter your real name and email address... click OK
- Check your email for a confirmation message, and click on the bottom link.
- In the window that opens, choose a password and enter it twice... click
OK... you're registered!!
- Write down your username and password so that you won't forget them.

- Go to the gallery homepage or the FLG page (link above) and click the
"login" link.
- Enter your username and password, click OK, and you're IN!

CREATE NEW ALBUM
- Make sure you're in the FLG-2005 gallery (
http://www.ioca.org/gallery/FLG-2005 )
- From the "admin options" dropdown list, select "new nested album"... You
will now be in your new sub-album.
- Fom the dropdown list select "rename" to give the album's directory a
descriptive name (i.e. FLG2005-myalbum)
- From the dropdown list select "properties". Give the album a title that
everyone will see, and enter a trip report if you like.

UPLOAD PHOTOS
- From the dropdown list select "add photos" ... now we're in business!
- In the Add Photos window, you can upload individual image files, or a
compressed file with LOTS of photos at once!
- Don't forget to go back and give each photo a caption when you're done...
so that others (now and in the future) will know who is in your photos,
where they are, and what they're doing!
- You are welcome to upload all your photos and use the site to share them
with your club members, family and friends. But even if you don't upload
them all, please put up a few to share your experience with the rest of us,
and record a little IOCA history! Do remember that this is a general
audience site, so please keep photos of things like drinking and
skinny-dipping to yourself.

If you run into problems, have any questions, or need help posting photos,
feel free to email me.

3. BEAR CANISTERS NOW _REQUIRED_ IN THE ADIRONDAKS

Below is a note from the NY State Department of Conservation with details
about the new regulations requiring the use of bear canisters in the
Adirondacks:

From: "David Winchell" <dtwinche at gw.dec.state.ny.us>
Date: 25 August 2005 11:14:55 AM EDT
Subject: Bear Resistant Canisters

The regulation requiring the use of bear resistant canisters by overnight
users in the Eastern High Peaks Wilderness of New York's Adirondacks
between April 1 and November 30 went into effect August 24. The regulation
requires that all food, toiletries and garbage be stored commercially made
containers constructed of solid, non- pliable material manufactured for the
specific purpose of resisting entry by bears.

Additional information regarding bears, bear canisters and avoiding bear
encounters - including downloadable fact sheets and tips strips - can be
found on the NYSDEC web site at: www.dec.state.ny.us/website/reg5/r5bears.html

A news release regarding the regulation can be found at:
www.dec.state.ny.us/website/press/pressrel/2005/2005102.html

Thank you assisting the NYSDEC to reduce negative bear/ human interactions
in the High Peaks and throughout the Adirondacks.

SPRING CONFERENCE
The IOCA Spring Conference 2006 will be hosted by Mount Hollyoke!

OTHER IOCA TRIPS....
We're hoping to get some more IOCA trips out this year! In order to
qualify as an IOCA trip, it must be advertised through IOCA beforehand
(post it on the website and/or email me)... and there must be at least
three schools in attendance. Here at MIT we're hoping to do something over
the winter... but if you have a trip you want to open to IOCA, or have
ideas for a trip that you want help organizing, let me know and we'll see
how we can help!

---------------------------------------------------

It's turning out to be a beautiful autumn.
See you outside!
-Christiaan
